This week marks one year since the Supreme Court upheld the Trump Administration’s discriminatory travel ban by a 5-4 vote. From the start, we’ve known that—despite claims by the Trump Administration—this ban has nothing to do with national security and everything to do with anti-Muslim bigotry. I’ve been working to make sure we get the facts on how this ban has been implemented so the public can see it for what it really is: a de facto Muslim ban. Based on my provision that was signed into law last year, we now know that just 5 percent of the applicants seeking waivers actually received them. That fact puts a lie to the notion that the Executive Order is a targeted security measure. We must overturn this discriminatory policy through ongoing court action or by legislation that I have co-sponsored.
