Here are just a few of the bills that passed by large margins in the House this year, only to be buried in the Senate:
H.R. 1: For the People Act H.R. 987: Protecting People with Pre-Existing Conditions H.R. 8: Gun Violence Prevention H.R. 5: The Equality Act H.R. 6: Dreamers & TPS H.R. 7: Paycheck Fairness Act H.R. 9: Climate Action H.R. 1644: Save The Internet Act H.R. 1585: Violence Against Women Act
Each of these bills has strong public support, and they are waiting for an up or down vote in the Senate. There’s just one problem: Graveyard Mitch McConnell. That’s what he calls himself — he’s proud of it.
This is not just an issue of Democrats vs. Republicans. It’s healthcare vs. no healthcare. Gun reform vs. preventable deaths. Equality vs. discrimination. And one man who indiscriminately blocks every bill, regardless of the merits or the urgency.
And it gets worse: last week — the same week that Trump said he was open to accepting foreign help in 2020 — Graveyard Mitch and Senate Republicans blocked a vote on a bill that would require campaigns to report foreign election interference.
Well, the House is now preparing a suite of common-sense election security and reform bills that will require the same thing. If there's one thing we should all agree on, it's that these reforms are overdue, and as the Mueller Report demonstrated, eminently necessary.
If Graveyard Mitch won't hold votes on these commonsense bills, make sure you call your own Senators to hold them accountable. Tell this do-nothing Republican Senate that they need to start doing their jobs. Now.
