And this is why there is teacher shortage! College costs have skyrocketed and then to only make $30,000. I retired after 40 years of teaching with almost enough credits to get my Doctorate. My daughter, as a new graduate bsn nurse, is making a salary compatible to mine upon retirement. Everyone has to pay the same for rent, food, car, and other for basic needs. Teachers can’t afford it.
Unfortunately the position of our government has been to use education as a source of money instead of funding public education making it equitable no matter a child’s zip code. They don’t want to support higher wages for teachers, however they are quick to condemn and blame teachers. How about coming into the schools and talking to teachers to find out what is needed? It’s not rocket science.
Teachers should be paid a decent wage at least something they are able to live on. When our politicians like Tim Ryan supports FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS and we workers see our wages get cut or stay stagnant, you have to expect this. It’s just the reality that we have to live with, unless we vote these awful politicians out of office.
Not all teachers get paid that low, plus the fact, they get long vacations and summers off, they can easily do tutoring or jobs while off in the summer. I know plenty of teachers that don't struggle that much. Of course, low-income areas are going to pay less, but that isn't just with teachers, that is with any job. I have three college degrees and have worked in higher ed for over 20 years, I don't get summers off and while my kids were young, I worked side jobs as well to pay my bills.
I love how this story never mentioned how much this teacher earns or what their expenses are. It is a one sided story with no facts but yet everyone can make assumptions as to the teacher being paid too little. Before you all jump on me about I don't know what teachers have to go through. I do my wife is a teacher and I know what they have to deal with. I know for a fact that a teacher with a master's degree and 15 years seniority in this area would be making around 70k.
Maybe she needs to learn how to live with a budget. Working 180 days also allows her to find a part time job.
Tired of hearing Congressman Tim Ryan say, This is unacceptable.,, for everything.. It went on for 8 yrs under U and Obama, and nothing was done.. Put the drink down long enough to do Something...
Did I miss something? I skimmed through the lengthy article and did not see where it showed how much SHE makes. Sounds like she does a terrible job with her personal finances.
Teaching has been denigrated for years. There are derogatory quips like: "those who can, do; those who can't, teach." Well, some of those who "do" make a mess of what they do and couldn't teach what they "do" if their lives depended on it! When I did my student teaching, parents were full of fury that their kids had homework. They believed that the teacher should have taught the children at school -- so, why should the parents help at home?, The introduction to information occurs at school. Mastery comes through practice. Hence, homework. The focus should be on learning. Do any parents (or members of the public) understand how people learn? Does anybody understand the relevance of mastery? (Incidentally, I ended up in the corporate sector in the field of Training & Development. Ultimately I developed a "learning architecture" for adults needing to transition from one field to another. I believe in learning. Life-long learning.)
As someone with a degree in education, this entire story is fake. If this woman can't pay her electric bill and car payment, working short days ( she does not go to the school at 5am) and nine months out of the year with a week off at Easter, 2 weeks off at Christmas, 2 weeks vacation in the nine months of work and every federal holiday possible, then she must have a severe problem with her budget. This entire story is why nurses, police, firefighters and EMS are not crying for this made up story.
